About Me

My photo
Hello, My name is Sharlinda Faith B. and I'm 25 years old. I have been a wife to my husband Nick for three and half years, and I am also a proud mother of our 3 year old son Lil Nick Jr. I'm the oldest of four children born to my black father and white mother. I'm also their only girl! Growing up our parents always told us we were mixed race and to be proud of both our heritages. Over the years my brothers and I have faced racism from both ends of the spectrum, but that never changed how we viewed ourselves. Time and Time again I've had to answer questions about my racial background, or have people angrily challenge me on how I define myself! These experiences along with the desire to know about others like me, lead me to read anything I could on the web about being biracial. I remember it as being one of the most amazing revelations in my life to find others who embraced both heritages just like I did! These last few years I have wanted to voice my opinions to the others. If enough people like me don't speak up then the world will never change.

Best Products For Curly Hair

This video shows the Devachan Salon and all their products. I must try these!

List of Things to Try

So what's on the agenda? I have heard many things about a new product line called Devchan made entirely with curly girls in mind.  I have heard nothing but goods things about the products so I'm really wanting to try once I can get enough to buy everything at once! They have some videos on Youtube about their products along with some helpful advice.

I've also heard from a co-worker of mine that Paul Mitchell Super Skinny serum is comparable to Bio Silk, but better in her opinion.

I'm sure many are familiar with Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner, but they also have a shampoo and deep conditioning treatment. I'm itching to try these as well.

Favorite New Mousse

When I let my hair dry wet without pulling back, I usually use a styling mousse or gel in it.My conditioner doesn't seem to do the trick alone. My favorite styling product tends to be mousse. It just seems to keep my hair in place and defined without being as sticky as a gel. I recently ran out of my Herbal Essence mousse and decided to try the Frizz-Ease Take Charge Curl Boosting Mousse this time around. It's a little bit more expensive, over 5.00 a bottle, but well worth it. It's an alcohol free formula and it defines my curls just right without drying out my hair.

Favorite Shampoo and Conditioner These Days

As you can surely tell, I'm always ready to try a new product. You never know what you might find!
Right now I'm currently using, and very impressed with,  Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner and Shampoo. They are both made with organic ingredients only, which keeps my hair feeling soft.I have been trying the conditioner only method in my hair when I plan to wear it curly, and the Organix conditioner is the best that I have left in so far.Up until now I had been using Herbal Essence conditioners in my hair but they are a little heavier. Organix has a slightly lighter feel to it and the scent is pleasant but  not too strong. I buy both the shampoo and conditioner at Wal-mart for about 5.94 a bottle.I've been looking online and Organix also has a coconut milk hair mouse, repair treatment, and serum I would like to try , but so far I have not seen them in stores.

It's been forever

So it has been forever since I last posted and I do sincerely apologize for this! I will definitely be more diligent in the future.  Things have been so busy at the hospital the last couple of months and it is wearing me out, not to mention my son's fourth birthday and Christmas preparations. I want to do better serving my fellow curly heads!

New Product / Product of the Week

I recently tried a new product by Herbal Essence called Totally Twisted Curl Boosting Mouse. It has lavender and jade extracts in it and smells absolutely heavenly. It's not very heavy and does not make my hair stiff or crunchy. It keeps the frizz out of my curls and keeps them springy and defined ! I definitely give this product a thumbs up!

Products of the Week

Ok ,so I'm apologising for not posting a new product of the week for almost two weeks! I have been working a lot lately, and everything has been just really hectic
So I will be posting two new products instead of the one. The first product is, Garnier Fructis Curl Construct mouse. This is the first mouse I have ever used in my hair and I must say that I'm pretty pleased with it! It helps hold and define your curls without making them sticky or stiff like many hair gels do. It's available at your friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart and I believe it's betweeen 3-5 dollars. Definitely a good product for a low price!

Next on my list is the EZ Comb. Apparently it has been advertised on t.v. infomercials but I have never seen the ads before. You can order them online or purchase them at your local Wal-Mart.My mother in-law had them in her hair the other day. I liked them so much she got me some for my birthday yesterday. They come in a package of two and the cost is only 10.00. You get a silver comb and a brown comb. You can check this product out here:

Tool Product of the Week

This week I actually have a ceramic iron, that I personally use, to reccomend. It's called the HerStyler Forever. It heats up in about 60 seconds and can get up to about 400F. You can adjust the heat to your liking. So far it's the best flat iron I have ever used! It straightens my hair much better and faster than anything else I have tried. I first saw this product in the mall which was being sold for a 100.00 or more. I really wanted one after the sales man tested it on my hair, but I held onto my money and looked online. I bought one on Ebay for about 40.00 brand new! I ended up dropping it one day and had to buy a new one. I bought the second iron off of Ebay for 35.00. I spent less than a 100.00 on two Herstyler irons! The average suggested retail price is about 170.00. Go check Ebay or Amazon. Amazon also has some very good prices. check this link out http://www.amazon.com/HerStyler-Forever-Ceramic-Black-Straightener/dp/B000TVHO1I/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1248370268&sr=8-17.

Also, take a look at the HerStyler website so you can look at all their products first and then price match on other sites. They have a new HerStyler TurboLite which looks like it is a replacement for the Forever.

Product for the Week

Ok my new product for this week will be Her Styler Hair Serum with vitamin E and aloe vera. I was walking through the mall about a month ago and woman at a booth put some in my curls. It made my hair shiny and soft but not greasy! I definitely reccommend this product but by any means do not buy it in the mall. The woman told me it would be 35.00 for the serum. I'm definitely glad I didn't buy because you find it much cheaper online. You can buy it at Amazon.com for 17.90.

Go check it out!

The Mixed Chicks Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Up4IdXw2U

watch the mixed chicks video on how to use the product!

Product For the Week

From now on I'm going to be posting a hair product or tool for the week. The first product of the week is Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner! It's very light and moisturizing without being greasy or sticky. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 9. It's an awesome product. Go to mixedchicks.net.

Myth no.1

Just want to say to anyone following my blog, sorry there's not much to read! I've been extremely distracted from writing lately! Hopefully within the next few weeks I can devote more time to this and have things up and going in no time.

So, the first hair myth I'd like to address is about hair washing. Anyone ever heard that if you're black or mixed with black that you can't wash your hair but once every two weeks! I suffered from this myth for years as a girl. After two weeks of no washing my hair became greasy and my scalp itched! It was even worse in the summer time!
People were always giving hair advice to my mom. She didn't have a clue what to do so she tried everything. When I hit my teenage years that's when I began to experiment more with my own hair. I discovered in that time ,that my hair was dry, but it was oilier near the scalp. The ends needed more moisture then the top of my hair did. I realized the longest I could wait to wash my hair, without it getting oily and itchy, was 1 week. In the summer time I could get away with washing every 3 to 4 days. I've never had oily hair or itchy scalp since!

When you're biracial everyone under the sun will try to give you hair advice, especially if your mother happens to be white. It's important to remember that just because you are part black doesn't mean your hair can be treated the same way that a lot of black women treat their hair. Also what works for me not work for another biracial girl. She may need to use more or less products, or hardly any products at all. My hair is tighter dry curls and very in between black and white. Some biracials may have looser curls with a texture more like that of a white persons. There is no specific way to do biracial hair that one must follow, but I sincerely hope that my advice helps someone out there!

Need Help With Hair?

About twenty years ago when I was a little girl my hair was such a trial! My mother had long, straight, and easy to comb hair. Her hair was so silky! I wanted to be just like my mom. I didn't understand why I couldn't have my mothers hair. I hated my hair with a passion. It was neither black nor white hair. It was tight, dry curls, but very fine and very soft. To add to my problems it was extremely thick like my grandmother on my mother's side. It was a nightmare washing and combing my hair. I remember it taking two hours to do my hair. My mother was hopeless at times. She often wondered if I would ever be able to do my hair on my own, and I often fearfully wondered the same. We tried everything. My hair was so much work I would never wear it down. I always insisted on wearing my hair pulled back or in two braids. My mother and I were desperate. My father's relatives kept telling her to relax my hair.My mother was reluctant but one day she broke down and finally bought me a relaxer. My hair was never the same. By the time I was sixteen my hair was extremely damaged and not nearly as long at it had been. The constant processing had broken my hair off little by little.

One day my mother and at a friend's house, who happened to be white, and told me that my hair could not be relaxed. Our friend was a stylist and owned his own salon. That indeed was a revelation to me. My mom and had always been under the impression that my hair was more black than white and that black people knew what to do with my hair. Not long after our friend told me I was ruining my hair, I got talked into relaxing it again. I worked a Jcpenney at the time near the Jcpenney salon. One of the stylists was going to a hair show in another state, and she wanted to do my hair and take pictures. I told her that I didn't want to relax my hair. Somehow she convinced me that my hair needed to be relaxed to grow better. When she was doing styling my air it looked lovely! It was swingy and the ends were curled under. It wasn't until I was on my hair that I realized my mistake. There were broken bits of hair falling onto my shirt! From then I never relaxed my hair.

For years I have experimented with my hair and tried all sorts of products until I have found what works for me. My hair, for the most part, is under control but I am still in the process of trying new products. My goal is to help provide resources for mixed race girls, or mothers of mixed race children who are frustrated with biracial hair.
